Real-Time PV Insights

Background

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) recently integrated two new solar photovoltaic systems into their infrastructure. Given the mission-critical nature of air traffic control, cybersecurity is the primary operational priority. The client required full visibility into the PV performance data but strictly prohibited third-party hardware from residing on their internal corporate or operational networks. To mitigate the risk of cyber-attacks, NATS demanded a solution that provided a "digital air gap" between their Building Management System (BMS) and the renewable energy infrastructure.

Solution

Juggle deployed the J-Box Bridge, a hardware-based security layer designed to facilitate data exchange without traditional network bridging:

Environmental Integration

Beyond electrical data, Juggle integrated sensors to monitor ambient conditions - including temperature and humidity - within the treatment and practitioner rooms to ensure the scanners operate within optimal environmental tolerances.

Expert Turnkey Installation

Juggle’s specialist engineers managed the end-to-end physical installation, ensuring the hardware was seamlessly integrated into the hospital’s critical electrical infrastructure without disrupting medical services.

Physical RS485 Air Gap

Physical RS485 Air Gap

Established a connection to the BMS using a serial bus (RS485) as the primary communication medium. Because the BMS interacts only via serial messaging protocols, it remains physically isolated from the IP-based network.

Reverse Gateway Architecture

Utilised the J-Box Bridge to act as a secure intermediary. It collects data from Modbus devices - including meters, G100 protection relays, and inverters - and translates it for the BMS without ever allowing the two networks to "see" each other.

Protocol Isolation

By bridging the two networks via a serial bus rather than a standard TCP/IP routing connection, the solution effectively firewalls the client’s infrastructure from external threats and third-party hardware.

High-Security Connectivity

The J-Box Bridge handles all complex firewalling logic internally, ensuring that data flows in a strictly controlled, one-way or filtered manner that satisfies stringent aviation security standards.

Seamless BMS Integration

Despite the high level of security, the solution provides the BMS with all necessary telemetry, ensuring NATS can monitor energy yields and system health in real time.

Conclusion

Through the deployment of the J-Box Bridge, Juggle has provided NATS with a high-integrity data link that balances operational transparency with absolute network isolation. The solution successfully delivers real-time PV insights directly to the onsite BMS while upholding the client’s rigorous cybersecurity and privacy requirements. This "air-gapped" approach establishes a new benchmark for safely integrating renewable assets into critical national infrastructure.
